I love contrast, old with new, soft with hard, modern technology with traditional hand craft. Mixing different elements to create something that evokes new emotions. This diptych pair of Guardian Dogs is hand-embroidered on archival-quality giclée-printed original artwork. Full of contrast, yet strangely harmonious.
Actually, guardian stone lions are often found in front of great mansions in China. But because China has no native lions, so much of the fierceness of lions was reimagined. So when Westerners visited China and saw these fierce creatures, they mistook them for dogs! Hence the name of foo dogs.
The right dog, traditionally male, rests his paw on an embroidered sphere (or globe) representing the flower of life, dominion over the world, and protection of the building's exterior.
The left dog, traditionally female, rests her paw on a playful cub, symbolizing the protection of the people inside and the nurturing of the family lineage.
Each piece is signed and embossed with the signature Octopus and Dahlias stamp. As shown in the last image
